Skrillex - "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites"

Lately I've been listening to the album Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites by Skrillex, and I must say it's pretty damn good.  Don't take my word for it though, check it out for yourself! (Be sure to listen to it in 720p it makes a huge difference.  Also, does anyone have any other related music suggestions I could listen to?)

Murphy's law.

First of all, sorry for the lack of content lately.  Like I said before, I got nailed with a wall of schoolwork last week.  When I wasn't doing homework, I was sitting on my amazing couch watching old Mega64 podcasts, or doing other "real life things".  Speaking of real life things (nice segway), Murphy's law is a fucking bitch. (and to make up for my lack of posting, here's a nice long wall of text containing nothing but rambling about things you don't care about.  Just like the rest of my blog :D)

A few years back (before I even owned a car) I snagged some free car speakers from a garage sale I was helping out at.  Last week I decided to install them in my car, since the back 2 speakers were blown, and the front two were stock anyways.  Little did I know that this simple DIY install would be a clusterfuck of bad things.

I started with my rear passenger side door.  I pulled the door panel off, and removed the blown speaker.  When attempting to test fit my new speaker, I realized that this was most definitely NOT going to fit.  Turns out my rear doors have 5 1/2 woofers, and I was in possession of 6 1/2 woofers.  Seeing as they were free speakers, I decided what the hell, may as well try and make them fit.  So I ran out to the store to buy some longer mounting screws, and screwed it in anyways (I had to drill new mounting holes in the 6 1/2 speakers to match up with the factory holes).  Aside from the fact that the woofer stuck a solid inch and a half out, it actually screwed in fairly easily.  Unfortunately there was no way in hell I was going to be able to get the door panel back on, so I dismounted it, and admitted defeat.

After that ordeal, I went on to Crutchfield to see how much money a new set of speakers would cost me, and conveniently enough, I noticed my car was listed as having 6 1/2 woofers in the front 2 doors.  So excitedly I went back out into the garage, and ripped my passenger door apart, and ripped the factory speaker out.  Only to find that I needed to buy an adapter.  Defeated yet again.

I patched my car up (which at this point now has 1 working speaker) and ordered a pair of 5 1/2 woofers for the back, and some mounting brackets for the front from Crutchfield.  (Really great website, if you ever need to buy any car equipment, order from them.  Their customer service/product support is freaking amazing.  When you call, the people who help you actually know what they are talking about.  Unfortunately these days, that's really not a common trait in product support.  Also, I got my order in like 3 days.)

Thursday, I get back from school with a package on my doorstep.  So excitedly I return to my garage, and open my little present.  I then found out I had to drill new mounting holes for the rear speakers, but that really wasn't a big deal.  Then I test fit the mounting bracket with my 6 1/2.  Doesn't fit.  Apparently I have "6 3/4 speakers, which don't work with that bracket, even though the box says 6 1/2) Defeated yet again.

So I think, fuck it, I'll just install the rear ones, and worry about the front later.  Install the right side, works flawlessly, put the door panel on, alright.  Things are looking up, time to move on to the driver's side rear door.  When I removed the factory woofer I was kind of surprised at how it didn't really look blown.  Everything seemed to be intact, but I'm no speaker expert, maybe it was some internal damage or something.  So I drill my mounting holes, wire it in, go to test it out.  Nothing.  Nothing coming from the factory tweeter, or the new woofer.  So I uninstall it, plug another speaker in.  Nothing.  Turns out something's wrong with the wiring for that door? Defeated.

So now I'm in my garage with a car that has 2 working speakers,  a pile of shame and sadness.  But do I give up?  No.  Because I'm a real man!

After looking at the brackets more, I concluded that with a little dremel work I could totally fix this.  15 minutes later I had 2 functional brackets.  I had to mount the brackets at a wonky angle, but I finally got it to a point where the speaker fit in the car almost perfect.  And for a free new speaker, almost perfect was going to be okay enough for me.  But wait.  Maybe I should check and make sure none of my wiring interferes with the window mechanism.  Turns out my wiring was fine.  But there was a big speaker  in the way, preventing the window from going down fully.  Fucking defeated.

In a feat of hobo engineering, I found some bolts to use as spacers between the bracket and speaker, which pulled the speaker out just enough to allow the window to go all the way down, while at the same time mounting perfectly centered without interfering with anything else (doorframe, door panel etc)  Now I mount the crossover, dremel a nice tweeter mount, and throw everything together.  Success! Time to do the driver door.

Same process on drivers side door, everything goes flawlessly, then I get into the car, shut all the doors, and prepare for a final test.  Crackling audio from the passenger side door... defeated.
In a fit of rage cursing Murphy for his stupid law I rip apart the door, fiddle with wires (I still have no idea what the issue was, but my fiddling apparently fixed it.) and re-attached it.  Finally, I have a kickass new sound system in my car.  Easy right?

I still have no idea what the issue is with my rear drivers side wiring, nor do I know how to troubleshoot it.  At first I thought it was my headunit wiring, but after messing with that, everything matched up fine, and even then, that speaker should have been blown out like the other backseat.  But at this point, who cares?  My car still sounds god-tier.  Was it worth it?  Hellyeah.  Plus now I have the pride of knowing I did it myself.  I didn't take the easy way out, paying someone else to do it.  Because I'm a real man.

tl;dr:  Installed new sound system in my car.  Pain in the ass, but well worth it, sounds awesome.

I'm not dead

Hey guys, sorry I haven't been posting lately, I pinky swear i'll put out a quality post tomorrow, with real content.    However, tonight all you get is a youtube clip.
This is a pretty old video by a group known as Mega64.  Basically, they do a bunch of little skits and stuff centered around the game industry.  They have their own podcast, which I've been catching up on lately.  Their videos never cease to amuse me, so I figured i'd share it in hopes that some of you will enjoy it too :D

Save the internets.

Sorry for the lack of content here lately (I've really just been linking stuff), still busy with that onslaught of schoolwork i mentioned a few posts ago (3 more essays to go, wohoo!)
Anyways, sign this.  Censoring the internet is just a bad idea, especially if its our government doing the censoring (they have a bad track record of doing things right, hence our current state of basically being owned by china).  All you need to put is your name, email (i just put in a dummy account) and zip code.

Mech Warrior

Oh my god.  I freaking NEED this.  It's basically a mech for kids.  I'm a kid on the inside, so I'm sure I can make this work.

I hear they're really shakin' things up in japan

Thats horrible, and i'm sorry for what i said.  I take it back.  For those of you who don't know, apparently Japan had another earthquake today, as if earth really needed to kick them while they were down.  Fortunately there's tons of ways to donate to the cause.  I know there's an item on TF2 you can buy where all the profit goes to the red cross for japan.  There's also some number you can text where it automatically charges 10 bones to your phone bill for Japan (so go find that number, and "borrow" all your friends phones)

In other news, i neglected to post yesterday again.  My couch got the better of me, and i spent the day sitting on my ass.  (I love you guys, but it was still totally worth it.  Ended up watching mega64 podcasts all day.)  I'm probably going to miss a few posts this week too.  Reason being, I've never really been an A student.  I don't have the motivation, or drive to really study things i just quite frankly don't give a poop about.  Because of my "don't give a poop" attitude, I tend to spend all my time doing things I like, as opposed to things I don't like.  This leads to a lot of procrastination.

Unfortunately, that also leads to regret when i have 2 hours left to write a 5 page essay on the oil spill in the gulf.

Usually i can manage to balance my procrastination and homework to a point where i can still get all my work done.  This makes me happy.  Unfortunately, as anyone who has ever gone to school knows, instructors hate it when students are happy.  My teachers saw that i was being happy one day, so they decided to band together and assign as many assignments as they could all at the same time in an effort to destroy me and my content-ness.

Their plan worked, seeing as I now have 2 major essays, a major test, and a major speech due in the next week or so.  On the bright side, I found out the windows 7 version of MSpaint is actually pretty nifty.  I may as well just uninstall photoshop, obviously i don't need it anymore.

Sorry for not posting yesterday, I decided to come home from school and sit on my NEW COUCH all day.  (i think i'll dedicate another blog post specifically to my NEW COUCH on a later date)

Moving on, while going through the blogs i follow i saw this little gem on desktop customizer (Check em out, he posts some cool stuff).  Basically, you install this application (install the mischievous version, calm is super lame) and when you run it, these little "Shimeji" guys climb all over your desktop, up your browser windows, and jump all over the place.  You can even click on 'em and throw 'em around.  Any hope of getting anything done is pretty much squandered when you install this app.  It's awesome!

And if you don't like the 2 skins it comes with, you can download more on Deviantart. (personally, I didn't really find anything I liked, since most of them are chibi anime characters, but you guys might find something.)

Hey. You. Read this.

3 weeks ago I was following my dad in his car while he drove my grandpa to the hospital (long story, but he's fine now).  I saw a pickup truck signal to turn into the lane my dad was driving in.  Instead of NOT turning because my grandpas car was obviously occupying the space he wanted to be in, the truck slowly started to turn into the middle lane at 70 mph.  Keep in mind, it wasn't like my grandpas car was in this trucks blind spot or anything.  The truck was actually in my grandpas car's blind spot, the truck could have easily seen him.  Quite literally inches from a collision the truck swerves back into his lane, and leaves his blinker on for the next 2 miles (most likely in shock from almost causing an accident).

Fast forward to last week.  I was driving home from class when I saw the car in front of me start veering to the right, into the curb.  It was obvious they were texting, or messing with a stereo, or falling asleep, or something, because there was nothing on the road to avoid, and it was a gradual turn.  Their front tire hit the curb, at which point they quickly managed to over correct their path into the left lane (luckily unoccupied), run a stop sign, and pull into a parking lot.

Fast forward to today (technically yesterday, since i'm writing this on Friday night).  Sitting in a line at a red light, the green car in front of me decides they need to change to the left turn lane, so they accelerate and move over.  Right as this blue car is driving up to make a left turn.  Luckily the person changing lanes in front of me caught their mistake, because the blue car was ether blissfully unaware that their passenger door was 3 inches from a bumper, or they just didn't care to stop.  Or react.  At all.  At first I thought they had actually hit each other, but the blue car just kept on driving.

So why am I telling you this?  I'm telling you this because you need to Fucking pay attention you dumbass.  I know everyone makes mistakes, and shit happens.  I'm not a perfect driver ether, but still.  Don't text and drive.  I'm sure it's not that urgent, it can wait until you get to wherever you're going.  Don't stare down your stereo while cruising down the road.  Look before you change lanes.  I don't want my car totaled because Kelsey needed to text Ashley about facebook drama, or because you have to change the station because nickelback just came on the radio.  (actually, if nickelback comes on the radio, you have my permission to do whatever the hell it takes to get that horrid sound out of your car.)
Oh.  And don't drink and drive.  That's dumb too.  And eat your veggies.  And drink water. its good for you, that diet coke stuff will kill you.  And change your underwear EVERY DAY.
Tomorrow I'll write a blog where i don't complain about stuff.  Pinky swear.

The blue ones taste like toothpaste and Lysol.

While driving to a college tour with my dad today i drove through a school zone..  I wasn't familiar with the area, so i didn't see any of the OMG SCHOOL ZONE signs, or the speed limit sign (plus we were lost, seeing as my ace navigator was on the phone, and we missed a turn.)  I was just kinda going with the flow.  Apparently the flow was far too fast, because as i passed a pickup at a mind blowing, neck breaking, dick blistering 32 MILES AN HOUR a cop flashed his little lights on his motorcycle and very politely took 250 dollars out of my money-that-i-don't-have fund.  I'm very upset by this (hence blog rant).  Just think of all the things I could have bought with 250 dollars.

  • 250 tacos
  • 1000 quarters
  • A new ipod (my 80 gb video is almost full, and it's battery life isn't what it used to be)
  • Roughly 280 bags of Gourmet House Long Grain White Rice (14 oz bag) off amazon (not including shipping)
  • 3571 feet of 3/8ths foam backer rod (used mostly for sealing gaps between a window and the wall)
  • 84.63 lbs of Haribo "techno" gummy bears (highly recommended this one, the blue ones taste like toothpaste and Lysol.)
  • 855 Oz of Nesquick chocolate milk powder
  • 25000 sheets of HP Color Inkjet Paper
  • 25 zip zap performance driving kits (i could have 250 glow in the dark mini traffic cones, and 250 orange mini traffic cones.)
  • 17 "constructible drinking straw" kits (i could have the coolest drinking straw ever.  My drink wouldn't even have to be in the same ROOM as me.)
  • 14705 8 oz Styrofoam cups
But no.  I have to send it to the state because these damn high schoolers don't know how to properly play frogger.  :<
(oh, and the tour sucked.  The guide didn't know anything about...anything relevant to the tour, and filled 2 and a half hours with "you had to be there" stories. She was real nice though.  The kind of person you'd want to be stuck in an elevator with.)
/rant.              //Next time i'll post about something that isn't me complaining about all of the things.
